PROJECTS

BlaGul_1000x200.png

Brändö Lax has received support from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFF) 2021–2027 for the implementation of the following projects.

Safer working environment at Björkö

9/2023-1/2025

Brändö Lax continuously strives to improve the working conditions for its staff and increase work safety in the field. At Björkö fish farming, fish farming frames of a model that cannot withstand high loads are currently used. They are made of a relatively soft plastic material that tends to buckle when covered with large amounts of snow and ice. This means an increased risk for the staff working at the cages to fall into the lake and there is also a potentially increased risk of seal injuries and fish escapes when the frame is bent towards the water surface. The company intends to invest in six 80 m diameter frames made of high-density polyethylene (PE100) from MG-Trading AB, which is known for its high strength and durability.

Fish farming sludge collection in the cage
3/2025-12/2025

The project's objective is to contribute to the development of sludge collection technology from fish farms in open systems, which is applicable under Baltic Sea conditions and in other groundwater areas. Brändö Lax will participate in the EU-Horizon-funded project Aquaphoenix (www.aquaphoenix.eu ) which runs from 2025-2029. Within Aquaphoenix, fish sludge will be collected from Norwegian and Åland fish farms and then converted into commercially valuable resources in agriculture and industry. The budget for Aquaphoenix includes a sludge pump and dewatering plant, as well as an extension of dense fabric and tarpaulin that is mounted on a fish farm so that it collects the sludge instead of letting it through. However, the fish farming company is responsible for purchasing the fish farm bag itself. The fish farming cage must be tailored to a special design suitable for the conditions in the Baltic Sea (shallow water, strong currents) and to fit in with the other parts of the sludge collection system.

Crane truck for handling cages
2/2026-2/2027

Brändö Lax needs to handle and lift fish farming cages in various work steps: Storage, washing, and carrying out repairs and service. To do this, a crane with sufficient capacity and stability is required. Currently, the company uses a smaller crane truck that does not meet the company's requirements for work safety and efficiency.
